CHAPTER 13

OUR SECRET

The sun was high above my head as I strolled through Cobble Alley. The street was rundown and covered in a smattering of trash. The cobblestones were cracked loose as it floated on dark muck, which sloshed upward when I stepped on.

The contrast with Ivory Streets was incredibly apparent since I had just been in the district less than twenty minutes ago. The faint floral scent was quickly replaced by the reek of urine and decay.

Instead of beautiful manors and broad boulevards where two wagons could drive in opposite directions, old, crumbling buildings lined narrow roads here. Crumbling stone walls and half-shattered windows were a common sight.

The difference was so great that it took me several moments to adjust, despite having traveled between the two districts for years.

My destination loomed in the distance after five more minutes of walking. The black brick wall and massive iron gate of the Beast towered over nearby buildings like a hulking monster.

I needed more information about Blood Oath if I were to take them down and save Scarlet. There was no one else better for me to ask than Anton because of his connections in the underworld.

His help would undoubtedly cost me something in return, and I dreaded it. But he was the fastest means for me to get what I wanted. So, I would go back on my words and fight in the Brawls again if that was what it took.

Glancing up at the clear blue sky, I cursed at my fate. I had tried so hard to leave this wretched place behind, but I was always forced to come back here again and again.

“Once this is all over, I’ll definitely take Mel and go far away from here,” I pledged, remembering the promise I made to take Nepharyll on a grand adventure.

That would become a perfect reason for me and the girls, if they would join me, to leave Gralez. Maybe we could set out into Wild Lands to seek out lost civilization or unexplored realms.

I shook my head, then chuckled to myself. I didn’t even know how long it would take to root out Daisy. It could be months or years. My future seemed so uncertain and full of danger that it was nearly impossible to see an end in sight.

Still, I would hold on to that hope.

Who knew, I might get to settle down with the girls and enjoy a peaceful life with them, be it five, ten, or twenty years from now.

Snapping myself out of the daydream, I wiped the stupid smile off my face. Now wasn’t the time to linger here. I needed to get my information quickly and return to the Iron Roses.

The only reason I dared leaving the smithy was because of the gathered crowd around the place. Countless noblemen packed themselves into the lobby once they heard that Rumia was temporarily shutting down her shop.

I doubted the Blood Oath would be brazen enough to strike in broad daylight with so many people there. But that still didn’t make me less uneasy about leaving the girls behind.
